Love Never Dies Opening Night

Famous for its opening night parties, the Sofitel Melbourne On Collins  hosted an unforgettable after party for the much anticipated opening of Love Never Dies at the Regent Theatre on Saturday 28th May, 2011. Months of planning with the Love Never Dies production team went into making this ‘a party to die for’ when 1500 guests arrived at the Sofitel and made to feel that they were seamlessly  transported to Act III of the show. With themeing by Action Events and lighting by Bytecraft Lighting, Sofitel’s ballroom was transformed into the carnival atmosphere and electronically charged world of Coney Island, New York, featuring a 5 metre clown, ferris wheel, festoon lighting and a Coney Island film from 1900 projected on the walls. Sofi’s Lounge  became a Peacock Lounge reflective of one of the most spectacular scenes in the show. In keeping with the Coney Island theme, Sofitel’s Executive Chef, John Savage,  created a delicious carnival-style menu including traditional hot dogs with sauerkraut, Coney Island pizza, donuts in branded bags, whilst the offerings in Sofi’s lounge were more sophisticated – French crepes, chocolate opera slices, all tempting and delicious.

Sofitel Melbourne On Collins’ enviable reputation for great opening night parties has been won through its ability to create and manage truly memorable events for large numbers of people, and the organisation for Love Never Dies is no exception. More than 150 staff including 22 chefs will be required on the night, and over 1,000 hours will be spent on set up, service and pack down for the event. The shopping list included ingredients for 8,000 canapés, 2000 hot dogs, 1500 pizzas, 2000 donuts. Special serving stations were be set up to ensure that guests have plentiful food and beverages throughout the night. General Manager, Clive Scott, said ‘The party is an extension of the show, and the experience of the show must continue into the hotel.

We will take major feature points from Love Never Dies, recreating scenes in the Ballroom and Sofi’s with elements of surprise. There is a skill to laying out and decorating a venue for large numbers. You must decorate for the flow of people around the party, not just for the sake of decoration. When you have large numbers, they should be served with a drink the minute they arrive and have food within five minutes.” With Sofitel’s expert planning and experience, guests were certain that the after party and the magic of Love Never Dies was  seamlessly blended with the themes of the musical to make the opening night a dazzling and memorable event.
